Medicare doesn't pay for everything...
Medicare Plans 101
The Right Plan to Protect What Matters Most
Original Medicare does not cover all healthcare costs, and beneficiaries may be responsible for paying for deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. Medicare Supplement and Medicare Advantage plans offer great coverage, here's how they work....
Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
- Medicare Supplement plans offer the most flexibility out of these options because there are no networks of doctors, no referrals, and prior authorizations are minimized. These are all important benefits that Advantage Plans do not provide.
- Although Medicare Supplement plans charge an additional monthly premium, they offer the most security for Medicare healthcare costs. These plans have options that will cover a hospital bill completely. With a Medicare Supplement plan, you have the ability of knowing exactly what your hospital bill is going to look like.
- Medicare Supplement plans are typically subject to strict underwriting, however there are circumstances in which you may qualify for guaranteed acceptance. For example, turning 65 entitles seniors to enroll into a supplement plan without having to worry about underwriting. This is a great option!
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
- Medicare Advantage Plans are a great option because they often don't charge an additional monthly premium, while Medicare Supplement plans do charge an additional premium. Both plans typically require you to have Medicare Part A and B to qualify for coverage.
- Medicare Advantage plans often provide additional benefits such as dental, vision, hearing, and more. Joe Namath talks about Medicare Advantage benefits in a commercial that you have probably seen. Medicare Supplement plans have less of the "bells and whistles", but are incredible plans nonetheless
- Medicare Advantage plans do not require underwriting, however they are subject to enrollment periods. There are exceptions, and when seniors turn 65 they qualify for a special enrollment period if they decide that a Medicare Advantage Plan is the right fit. There are also special election periods that may allow you to change outside of an enrollment period.
